Not a fan...

I am not a fan of #WomensHistoryMonth.   I teach history to homeschoolers.  I tutor them, ahem.   Their parents remain the ultimate authority on their education - AS DO ALL PARENTS REGARDLESS OF HOW THEY CHOOSE TO EDUCATE THEIR CHILDREN.... Sorry, #soapbox.

Anyway - and in telling history, it is filled with Women.   I dont need a special month to point out - hey, remember when we talked about this, well, there was this chick....   Its demeaning and condescending and does just the opposite of the proffered reason for the month.

The Independence of these United States from the Crown would not have happened without women.   You could not have had a John Adams without an Abigail.   Their letters to each other are full of brilliance on both sides, balancing and bouncing off each other, along with affection and, for the time, some friskiness from the future President towards his beloved.

There is the battle of the minds between Mr. Adams and Mercy Otis Warren publicly on display in their letters back and forth as well as public articles in the newspaper.   The break in their friendship and eventual reconciliation when time and tempers had passed... And he gave her a piece of  jewelry in the friendship makeup - a practice I can get behind in a girly manner.

Lets discuss MumBet - the black woman who was in bondage who reasoned the "all men created equal" applied to her as well and sued in Massachusetts for her freedom.  And. Won.  And then went on to continue EMPLOYMENT and a life she chose to live.

Does it take a little effort to balance the narrative?  Yes it does.  But its an effort that raises the argument and doesnt belittle women to just 1 month a year.  Women are not an aside.   They are integral to the story - they are the spine of the book.

And this is a small snapshot of a bigger pet peeve of mine...  To cater to certain peoples.  If we want equality - then we need to behave in such a way as no one is more equal or less equal than another.   That goes with special months and special laws.  It has a backhanded way of showing a group as less than and thus in need of special treatment.  How arrogant.   Women dont need a month - we have every damn day of the year.

**Please do not read my 3 LIMITED examples as finite.   This is a rant post and thus I didnt research, but just went with the train of thought and apparently, it was Revolutionary War.   Blame it on the over-saturation of a new baby named Archie with a hyphenated last name that would get him beat up if he didnt have body guards going to preschool with him....  I mean, why do we care?  Well, this we doesnt.
